Job Description

The New York Foundling is seeking a Tutor to join their team. The Tutor will work with students in foster care in New York City and New York State, providing one-on-one tutoring sessions to help them develop effective study habits and achieve their academic goals. Overview The New York Foundling is a nonprofit organization that has been supporting hundreds of thousands of individuals and families since 1869. The organization provides a range of services, including foster care, education, and mental health services, to help people achieve stability, strength, and independence. Responsibilities Provide one-on-one tutoring sessions to students in foster care, focusing on developing effective study habits and exploring various majors and careers. Meet with students 1-2 times per week, either in-person or virtually, to provide academic support and mentorship. Maintain a regular schedule of tutoring sessions and promptly report any non-tutoring-related concerns to the appropriate program and agency staff. Collaborate with students, families, and other stakeholders to develop and implement a long-term academic plan that takes into account the student's interests, strengths, and areas of growth. Participate in training and self-study to ensure that content knowledge remains effective, efficient, and up-to-date. Submit feedback after each meeting with a student to track goals, successes, and challenges. Qualifications Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Email, and Data entry systems. Able to deliver effective instruction across all core subjects. Compassionate and patient, and sensitive to the needs of the target population. Proficient in or able to quickly learn a wide range of academic subjects at multiple grade levels. Able to develop and tailor lessons that fit the particular strengths of each student. Capable of working in a group setting, and of giving and receiving critical feedback.
