The Math Tutor is charged with creating an atmosphere that promotes student success, social and academic engagement, and personal development. The Tutor reports to the District Dean of Mathematics.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or related field
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Mathematics or a related field
  • Experience teaching in a college setting
  • Two years of experience in an educational environment, social service agency, or private business sector with specific experience in customer services, preferably student services
  • Ability to tutor in additional subjects
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in working with at-risk, underserved student populations
  • Work-related experience working with college students

Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities
  1. Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with instructional leaders, faculty, and staff to facilitate tutoring schedules.
  2. Tutoring in math courses ranging from lower algebra courses to upper-level calculus.
  3. Stay current with best practices in math instruction.
  4. Participate in campus-wide events relating to academics and student services.
  5. Create flyers and brochures for marketing purposes and to promote math tutoring services.
  6. Maintaining responsibility for creating an inviting, student-friendly learning environment.
  7. Collaborate with the District Director of Mathematics Instruction to review and maintain the integrity of the department curriculum.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position:
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication and problem-solving skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the College's mission, vision, and values.
  • An understanding of the unique challenges low-income/first-generation college students face.
  • Knowledge of tutoring processes and methods.
  • Knowledge of tutorial/learning materials and instructional aides.
  • Ability to engage with students in face-to-face and virtual environments.
  • Continually maintain open communication with assigned students and cultivate professional relationships with departments.
  • Competency with personal computers, mobile devices, and standard office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and online meeting software.
  • Participates in college-wide meetings, committees, training, and events as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the District Director of Mathematics.
