Job Description
We are looking for a driven and detail-oriented Nuclear Engineer to take a leading role in the design, analysis, and optimization of nuclear systems for our microreactor . This role covers a range of disciplines—including radiation shielding, criticality safety, accident dose consequence, reactor physics modeling, transient analysis, and radiation detection.
You’ll be responsible for shaping and executing nuclear engineering strategies, conducting high-impact technical studies, and collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team in our fast-paced startup environment. The ideal candidate thrives on solving complex technical challenges, communicates with clarity, and has a strong passion for advancing reactor technology.
Key Responsibilities
Lead nuclear design and analysis efforts, including:
Shielding: Perform operational dose and shutdown activation analysis, waste categorization, and align shielding design with customer and regulatory requirements.
Neutronics: Conduct ex-vessel reactor flux and energy deposition analyses, ensure criticality safety, and manage verification and validation (V&V) of nuclear toolkits and reactor models.
Accident & Dose Consequence Analysis: Evaluate radiological dose consequences for various accident scenarios for both demonstration and production units.
Transient Analysis: Execute coupled neutronics and thermal simulations to better understand reactor dynamics.
Translate technical requirements into actionable input for cross-functional engineering teams.
Provide nuclear engineering expertise and feedback to drive quality and safety.
Perform additional nuclear design and analysis tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field (Master’s degree counts as 2 years’ experience).
1–2+ years of nuclear engineering industry experience.
Experience with radiation transport codes (e.g., MCNP, OpenMC, Serpent).
Proficiency in at least one scientific programming language (Python, C++, C#, FORTRAN, etc.).
Fundamental knowledge of thermal-hydraulic principles.
Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Proven ability to deliver high-quality engineering work in a collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with variance reduction techniques and associated software (Attila4MC, ADVANTG).
Strong background with tools such as OpenMC, Serpent, MCNP, Attila4MC, MOOSE, RELAP, Pronghorn, or GRIFFIN.
Familiarity with high-performance computing and distributed software development.
Experience with CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, SpaceClaim).
Knowledge of dose consequence modeling tools such as MAACS or NRC-RADTRAN.
At least 1 year of software development or scripting experience.
Hands-on experience in hardware design or testing.
Additional Requirements
Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Must be able to work 100% onsite at our El Segundo HQ .
